Craft and Shopping

Sweet... savoury... spicy...

Hardouin delicatessen in Vouvray is an institution in the region. You will find rillons there just like they used to be made, and all ready to travel in your suitcase. Are you looking for an original gift? Did you know that Gâtinais saffron is harvested in the Centre Region? This precious spice is sold prettily packed, in powder or filament forms, and will add that special something to your cakes and dishes. For a tangier touch, Orléans vinegar has been made in the traditional way since 1797.

La Poire Tappée C. Mouton CRT Centre
Les Forestines de Bourges C. Lazi CRT Centre

For those with a sweeter tooth, the Cotignac d'Orléans comes in a small wooden box adorned with the image of Joan of Arc and offers all the fruity flavour of quince paste. In Bourges, Forestines boast attractive pastel colours and a soft centre, while Praslines of Montargis are toasted almonds with Gâtinais honey. In Tours, the La Livre Tournois confectionery produces some specialities that are not to be missed: stuffed prunes, nougat and barley sugar among others… Just a short distance from the château, the Biscuiterie de Chambord proposes the Palet Solognot with its pieces of hazelnut, pistachio or raisins. Sablés de Nançay biscuits have been made to the same recipe for 40 years. Like the young Marcel Proust, you really must try the Madeleines of Illiers-Combray. In Rivarennes, the Poire Tapée (Flattened Pear) is a most curious speciality. It has reappeared recently thanks to a group of ramblers, and can be enjoyed in marmalade or terrines, with your aperitif or as a dessert. Finally, there is always the eau de vie of Olivet to round of your meal in style.
